Leeds United 2 Brentford FC 2: The Man Himself

The first thing you notice about the match this afternoon is how noisy Elland Road is. This is the twelfth man. This match will need something special to get Leeds to safety – who else but the man himself – Patrick Bamford.

The first thing you notice about the match this afternoon is how noisy Elland Road is. This is the twelfth man. This match will need something special to get Leeds to safety – who else but the man himself – Patrick Bamford.

The line up for this match sees Bielsa place faith in Firpo but not Rodrigo. Firpo improved in the Crystal Palace match whilst Rodrigo did not. Ayling is back and Bamford is on the bench

Roberts, making his only on his third premier league start this season, is the striker – he performed well in recent games but needs to score.

Lively start by Leeds with James slipping in the box in the first minute. Brentford pressing just as hard so begins as open game with action at both ends. Rain has made the pitch slippy, so plenty opportunity for mistakes.

Brentford have three defenders over six foot that will give Leeds problems from set pieces.

Early problem for Leeds with Cooper leaving the pitch with a hamstring problem. This is a big loss for Leeds with the tough December schedule ahead. Confusion as Klich thought he was coming on instead Harrison is on. It looks like Leeds are going for a back three with Ayling taking the captain’s armband.

Leeds not finding a way into the Brentford penalty box relying on crosses that are easily snuffed out by the tall Brentford defenders.

On 25 minutes Leeds finally show some class over Brentford. Raphinha made a switch to the left that gave Leeds smarter passing into the box. Raphinha reads the signals from Roberts and slots the ball into space in the box for Roberts to toe poke it past the Keeper.

Dreadful referee decision with Roberts shoved by Brentford player into a foul on Brentford and getting a yellow card.

Roberts at the end of excellent build up with a pass from James with Roberts in Space and a shot on target requiring the keeper to make a finger tip save.

Pressing by Leeds is relentless on Brentford trying to get out of their box causing mistakes by Brentford and much raucous cheering on by Leeds fans.

Brentford looking aggrieved after James catches up with Jansson and gets his foot in front to kick the ball first before Jansson goes to ground. Then Goode slides in a tackle from behind taking Roberts first then the ball, and gets a yellow card for it.

More injuries

Raphinha again in the action early on in the second half but dreadful defending on the eighth minute of second time with Brentford getting a clear shot from the edge of the penalty box and no Leeds defender closing him down. This was clearly against the run of play so worrying.

Phillips is then off with a calf injury and Klich on so Leeds are now without two of their most senior players. Brentford try to take the initiative and Ayling takes a full shot in the face. It takes a few minutes for him to get back on his feet.

Two subs and we are still waiting for Bamford to be subbed on. In the meantime Brentford carry on complaining that Firpo fouled in the penalty box. Leeds are sailing close to the wind with Canos missing a sitter.

And then Canos does score and Leeds squander their lead. Leeds were undone by Canos losing Llorente. Leeds then run out of ideas. Firpo is taken off Bamford making his return to a loud reception. It’s a more attacking line up with James, Roberts, Raphinha and Bamford, but the defence will be tested by Brentford.

Just when it looked all over for Leeds in the 94th minute Leeds deliver a peach of a corner going in at head height. Ayling rises highest and flicks on. It lands at the feet of Patrick Bamford who slots it in the next in front of him.

Another late, late show by Leeds, this time saving a point that they deserved. Who else can save the day other than Patrick Bamford?

Man of the match: Tyler Roberts
